Clean Carpet Naturally – The spring time is always the time that we most associate with giving our home a good clean. We search the internet high and low to find the latest techniques and best ways to get our properties looking spick and span. One of the areas that perhaps needs cleaning most is our carpets, after all they take as much of a beating as anything else. They can start to look a little on the dull side, not to mention that they will be full of bacteria, dust and pollen that has been traipsed in throughout the year.
Naturally, you want you home and carpet to look perfect but calling the professionals too frequently can be expensive so we have decided to give you 5 carpet cleaning tricks that are simple and most importantly, non-toxic.
It may seem obvious but it is surprising how many people don’t vacuum their carpets frequently. This is an absolutely vital task that should be carried out at least weekly, preferably more with professional cleaners called in every 6 months. This will help your carpet to last longer, look better and be more hygienic.
Stains and marks on carpets are inevitable as things will get spilt from time to time. Don’t worry, we have an easy method that involves mixing a solution of three parts water and one part white vinegar. Once again, vacuum the area first and then with a clean, preferably white cloth apply the solution to the stains or marks. Leave a few moments then use an iron over the cloth, and the stain should be drawn into the cloth.
You don’t need to call upon the services of a professional every time you have a spillage. You can give your carpet a deep clean using regular household products. If you are washing your carpets or rugs in a washing machine, we suggest making a solution of ¾ of a cup of hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup of white vinegar, 2 teaspoons of regular liquid soap, 2 teaspoons of fabric conditioner and a few drops of your favourite essential oils for good measure.
Sometimes our carpets won’t smell as fresh as we may like but don’t worry this can easily be rectified. Simply combine baking soda and a few drops of essential oils in equal measure and then spread it on the carpet, leaving it for approximately 20 minutes. If you have animals, you can add around ½ a cup of borax to kill fleas. We suggest that you do this process prior to vacuuming.
Like everything in life, it is better to reduce the risk of accidents of marks rather than deal with them afterwards. Remove your shoes before walking on the carpet or at least wipe them on a mat. Slippers that are only worn in the house are also a good idea and sometimes guests are more comfortable with this rather than walking around in bare feet. Where possible try to keep pets off the carpet or at least make sure they are clean after going outside.
